The incident happened in Uniondale, at the Nassau County Department of Social Services building on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, at around 2 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Nassau County Police said a man placed propane tanks near the building and then threw lit flares toward them before running away.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, detectives arrested 46-year-old James Luca and 25-year-old Jayson Reyes, both of North Merrick, in connection with the incident.

Both men are charged with attempted arson, obstruction of governmental duties by means of a bomb, and criminal possession of a weapon.

They were scheduled to be at First District Court in Hempstead on Friday, Oct. 4.

The charges aren’t the first for Luca, who was accused of throwing an explosive device onto the hood of a woman’s car in North Merrick in February 2023, as reported by Daily Voice.

In that incident, the device exploded, damaging the vehicle. Nobody was injured.
